"Harlen Bound CD (2008)
Playtime 13'12"

Wellcome to the website of  The Tin Pan Alley Jazzband from Enkhuizen, The Netherlands. Here is some information about the band. the CD's en some links to other interesting jazz-sites. When you click "Pictures" you go to an archive of old and recent band pictures, gigs, the Enkhuizen Jazzfestival and other jazz-happenings. Enjoy!

Old Style Jazz

With the Tin Pan Alley Jazzband the whole scala of the swinging music from the first half of the previous century is presented. Because of  Jan van Deursen's compositions and orchestrations the band has a style and sound of its own. Pieces that not many other 6 or 7 head jazzbands will play, are played by this band. Every now and then a steady piece of South-American or African music is thrown in, together with a "jazzed-up" pop song.

What Other People Say:

"Full-Time Tmateurs"

However professional it all may look and sound, The Tin Pan Alley Jazzband is manned by pure amateurs, who have fun in letting others hear and see what they can do and like to do.

The Origine

The Tin Pan Alley Jazzband exists since 1988. The musicians had, sometimes with one or more of the bandmembers, gained experience in other jazzbands or in other kinds of music. Some bandmembers also play in other (jazz- or other-)bands. That shows the broad interest in the fenomenon "music". Tin Pan Alley Jazzband members are regularly asked to sit in with other bands and are often seen at jamsessions here and there (for instance in café "Bontekoe" in Purmerend, every third Thursday of the month).

The Name

The orchestra's name has been derived from the part of New York, where in the beginning of the 20th century the music publishers had gathered and where the atmosphere was filled with various styles of music.

Always Something New

During the weekly rehearsals The Tin Pan Alley Jazzband is constantly occupied with practising newly added numbers, but also numbers that haven't been played for some time are "excavated" every now and then. With every performance something new can be heard. This keeps it divers and challenging for the audience as well as for the band members.

CD "2000"

In April 2000 we recorded another CD, just for ourseleves. We felt we had a nice repertoire and because of oncoming changes in personel, we went to the Beaufort studio and recorded the following numbers: Going to town, The Entertainer, Revival (jazz-waltz), When it's sleepy time down South, New Orleans Stomp, Creole Jazz, Bohemian Rag, Now that I've gone (own composition), Portrait of the Lion, That G-minor thing (also know as That D-minor thing, but we thought G-minor sounded better), Into each life some rain must fall, Freeze and melt en The Peach. Only for real close relations we make a copy every now and then, which we can only give away, beause of the copyrights. So don't call or email for a copy...

Sgt. Pepper's Jazzclub CD: "Sounds of Jazz"

The Tin Pan Alley Jazzband can be found on this CD with the number "Freeze and Melt" (2nd track). This number can be heard or downloaded on this site by clicking this link.

20 Years aniversary:
In 2008 The Tin Pan Alley azzband celebrates its 20th aniversary. This celebration took place on April 20th, 2008 in the Sgt. Pepper's Jazzclub. The new CD was presented at this occasion. Another band, that Jan van Deursen is a member of,  came and play. That is `So All The Matters, very nice, really, also old style jazz. It is an ten men/woman band of almost retired musicians who wanted to play and perfrom "zo al temet er 'es" (every now and then). The band doesn't have a website, but there is video of them on YouTube. A couple of numbers were played with two former band members Bob Kieiwtt and Willem Bosma. Former banjoplayer Hans Noorman weas present too, but he cannot play anymore, elas.

The Future

The musicians of The Tin Pan Alley Jazzband have the intention to keep on playing "music from the previous century" untill far beyond the year 2000, during performances and on CD's.

Agenda:

The  agenda is empty. And it will stay empty for some time. In the first place The Tin Pan Alley is without a trumpet player. And in the second place drummer Simon Siezenga is ill. He hopes to be back in "full swing" by the end of 2009, after intensive treatments. Untill then The Tin Pan Alley Jazzband limits to rehearsing an looking for a trumpet player...
